As I was driving to and from Chicago this weekend I was listening to CDs in the car. While many people would probably listen to their favorite music, I was soaking up the teachings of Brian Tracy and Dan Kennedy. This is a habit I picked up many years ago and it has really delivered results BIG TIME!
Better than Average Advice
Did you know that the average American drives 30 minutes each day to and from work? I know that you’re not average, you’re all superstars! But after hearing this drive time many of you wish you were average cause you’re driving double that. Anyway, it has been determined that by listening to educational materials in the car, at 1 hour a day, 5 days a week, you could complete a 4-year degree in 2 years.
Take Advantage of the Mobile University
We’re all business owners with tons going on. We’re running to and from meetings, networking like mad, buzzing from here to there. Wouldn’t it be great to maximize that time? Instead of thinking as that thing with 4 wheels and seats as a car, imagine it a mobile university.
There are a few reasons for this. If you’ve carefully selected your materials, you can absorb some pretty great ideas that you can “Swipe and Deploy” (Dan Kennedy-Bill Glazer speak) for your business. You could learn something completely new to impress your clients, business associates and spouse. But more than anything, you might event actually welcome traffic. Instead of it driving you crazy, you’ll be thinking about what you’re learning.
I’ve also incorporated this concept into my daily activities. My car is 12 years old and I just have 68,000 miles on it. My education would be severely limited if I just listened to educational CDs in the car, so I listen as I do other things. I catch up on You Tube videos as I wash the dishes, fold laundry and listen on my Ipod at the doggie park. This gives me something new and fresh for clients.
Skipping Steps is Good
So here is a bit of the learning I absorbed last weekend. If you want to improve efficiency (and WHO DOESN’T?) you should look to decrease steps in any process. I’ve been thinking about this ever since. I love this idea. I’ve decided to decrease as many steps in a process as possible. One thing I’m really focusing on is email. I’m trying to get the info from the email and file it immediately. This will skip the steps of looking for it later on. I know many of you are already doing this. You need to think about which steps you want to decrease and work on those. Try it and let me know how it goes.
