The 2nd part of a 5 part series on mistakes not to make in your business titled Do These and You’re Doomed. Each day we will focus on another mistake you should work hard to avoid.
Don’t Think Small
The next thing that you want to avoid doing when starting your business, is giving it a name that represents a local business. While this may give you an initial boost, over the long run it will serve to hold your business back. Successful businesses are poised for growth and open to the world; the more people that feel invited to your business, the more revenue you will make.
Don’t Sound Cheap
Be careful that your name doesn’t sound like a “cheap” company. If the name screams we’re the lowest price, don’t be shocked that people don’t want much to pay for the product or service. I’d avoid “Value” anything like the plague.
Don’t Make Profit a Bad Word
Don’t make it sound like a charity. If it does don’t be surprised when people don’t expect to pay. I’ve had clients come in with names that sound like the business is a not for profit company. The client were upset that no one actually wanted to pay for the service. I wasn’t surprised a bit.
Searching Pays Off
Be through in your searches when you do have a name that you like. Make sure the URL is available and buy the .com, .net and .biz if you can. Also, I recommend buying the misspellings of the name as well. Then point them all to the same website.
I like a name that speaks directly to the result of using your product or service. Sending the message to the potential client can often be a big bonus for you and the customer. What they really want is the result of using your product or service anyway.
A name should be specific enough to paint pictures in the mind of the customer yet not be so limiting as to make them think it too narrow.
When it comes to naming, it seems like you know when you have the right one. The key is to kick enough around so you are able to find it. You might want to check out my postNames Will Never Hurt You – Not So to learn more about names.
