Businesses are exactly like people passing through stages in our lives. At birth, we’re infants, then we grow to toddlers, we pass through our adolescent years, and reach adulthood. Businesses are no different although how we design and manage our business dramatically affects its ability to pass through the stages of growth. In essence or decisions either stifle or fuel our business and determines failure or success.
Nothing is Cuter than a New Baby nor is Anything More Demanding.
A start up is definitely an infant. Like a new baby, the parents give it 24 hour care and feeding. Actually the care started during the pregnancy, when all the plans were made for the child’s life. The more educated and knowledgeable the parents, the better the chances the child has to succeed. Good parents read, study, attend classes, speak with other parents, take or discard advice from their own parents, and attend their doctors appointments. They choose a quiet place for the nursery, decorate it eagerly in preparation for their new arrival. They do everything possible to ensure that their baby has the best possible start in life.
Preparing for the New Business
People need to do the same thing with their business. I’m amazed at how many people haven’t taken the same steps they would when having a child. They haven’t read business books, haven’t created a plan, don’t have a quiet place to work, haven’t spoken to other business owners, and haven’t gotten professional help. They just launch a business because they are really good at delivering the product or service, which isn’t all that important in the scheme of things.
Often after the baby arrives new parents just aren’t ready for the job. They seek help in the way of nannies, baby sitters or day care. The parent that wanted to do everything alone and provide for the baby exclusively, is too exhausted to care for the baby properly. The smart ones realize that it’s actually in the baby’s best interest to get some professional help.
Business owners are no different. The idea of having a business is very different than actually running a business. Gone are the fantasies, you wake up to a 24 hour a day job. You’re the one in charge of every decision, and most tasks and responsibilities that you didn’t know existed. You realize quite quickly that help is needed and it’s neededyesterday.
If you’ve done all your homework, have had good advice and some expert help, you have a great chance of moving into the toddler stage in a few years. If you’re already experiencing lots of challenges, you might seek expert help to manage the stage you’re at.
