Stephen M.R. Covey believes in results and so do I!
Either you have a commitment to make things happen or you don’t. No BS, please. Either you’re going to do it or you’re not…
Beyond the Dream…
This post is really about getting results. So what are results? They’re not the dreams, the ideas or the plans. While these things are important but they shouldn’t be confused with results.
What I’m referring to is the thing that comes from the dream. You morph that dream into a clear and concise idea. From the idea you sit down, with pen in hand, and write out a plan. Which is great. Everyone needs a plan, in fact, it is imperative to determining, and subsequently, controlling where you want to go.
Where many people stall is at the point that the plan reaches the action stage. They happily spend lots of time and tons of energy on creating a beautiful plan with little regard for the follow through. Without action there will be no result. So, all the work will be for naught. Hours of prep are wasted, loads of time spent in vain and, sadly, people are no closer to their goal.
So how do we get to the action stage? I’m sure there are many solutions to this challenge. I’m going to list a few and I’m inviting you to post some of your own here.
Misery Loves Company
Usually people who are not action oriented spend time with people who are duds. Frequently unhappy with the way life is treating them, they settle for a unfulfilled existence, rather than make any really changes. They seem totally unaware that action is a requirement for results.
This should be an easy one. Find a group of people who are on the go, making things happen and actively committed to achieving results. Be supportive of them, their ideas and projects. They will return the favor by stimulating you into action.
Birds of a Feather, Flock Together
Attend events that support action. Look for courses, seminars, workshops, and conferences that include action as a feature. You will be lead into action by the instructor and other attendees. Often people who lack action as just confused. At least one step of the process or another is unclear and that uncertainty creates inactivity. If you are able to get past the confusion, you’ll take off.
Going it Alone
If you have to work towards your dream alone, here are some suggestions. Break your action down to the smallest, easiest task. Focus only on that particular task and nothing else. When that task is complete, you are ready to move on to the next. Soon you will have made so much progress you will be able to complete larger tasks without any problem.
Stephen M.R. Covey talks about the fruit of the tree being the results. All the other components necessary including, credibility, character, intent, and capabilities won’t help you if you aren’t able to provide results. The last thing you want to be is an “all show and no go.”
Your Ideas for Action
I’d love to hear your ideas for getting results. We need all the help we can get and often it’s just one key point is all that’s needed to get someone going.
