They set out to do something, make plans and expend tons of money, time and energy. And then NOTHING happens. Or maybe not much…
Needless to say, they’re not experiencing the success they hoped would be theirs. It just isn’t working for them and they get discouraged. I understand the feeling, hell I’ve had it myself but I am here to say that when something isn’t working there’s a problem. Usually what is needed is…
Doing the same thing, the same way and expecting different results isn’t only crazy at AA, it’s just plain crazy. So, what should an entrepreneur do? I say stay the course, but make modifications until it works the way you want it to.
BUT BEFORE YOU DO…
Look closely at what’s working and what isn’t. Analyze exactly what’s going on in your business. Take a 360 approach and leave NOTHING to chance. Assume you know zilch about your business. (Now is the best time to bring in a consultant. They’ll start asking questions that you absolutely must find answers for. Usually the reason people aren’t buying from you is because you haven’t been speaking directly to them in a way that they understand. A good consultant will help you come up with a motivating message.)
RELEASE THE EGO
This is best done without ego. Sometimes as entrepreneurs we hang onto an idea that either never really worked or hasn’t worked for awhile. For whatever reason we tend to get stuck there and not want to give it up. (I have a client that is trapped in a place that isn’t allowing her to adjust what she is doing. The change that I am encouraging her to make would allow her to reengage previous customers and offer them more opportunity to do business with her. This one minor change could double her business and create excitement that would breathe new life into her company. She remains stuck!)
Get out there and talk to people. Ask your clients, customers, employees, adults, kids, other business owners, associations, the more people you talk to the more ideas you’ll get. Of course, this might be a good time to speak with a consultant or two.
FOCUS ON WHAT’S WORKING
This research should give you valuable clues as to what’s working and what isn’t. Focus on doing more of what’s working and less of what isn’t.
You’ve been able to stay the course and reach your goals. If you’ve made changes, chances are they needed to be made anyway.
BUSINESS IS DIFFICULT
And good ideas sometimes fail. The smart people make the changes that need to be made early enough to stay in business.
