I posted yesterday about Small Business Saturday and I NEVER mentioned contacting the media. I’m so embarrassed I want to run and hide. I can’t do that so I’m fessing up.
SBS is the perfect chance to grab some FREE publicity. Thanksgiving weekend is all about shopping. (No matter what business you’re in, you’re selling, so there’s a potential story here.) It’s also a slow time for the media. Mostly everything else is quiet and the media still has the same 24 hours a day of airtime to fill. They are usually pretty desperate for some “News” and they look to us to help them “create” it.
AMERICAN EXPRESS HAS PAVED THE WAY
The media is aware of Small Business Saturday, thanks to the AMEX Open Forum. They’ll be looking for stories of how local business owners are maximizing the day. As always the more creative an idea is, the better. After all, we know how the media loves drama. This is our chance to give them some in exchange for something we can’t afford to buy – Media Coverage.
The best advice I can give is to use some of the ideas I posted yesterday or come up with your own to make the most of this golden opportunity. I would love to hear any ideas that you come up with, so please share them on my comments section of the blog.
