No matter what you call them, there are really just two shortages that all small businesses must over come. In this post I’m going to discuss one of thing that entrepreneurs seem to be lacking. Next post I’ll be speaking about the other, which I’ll keep you guessing about for awhile. For now, let’s look at….
The clock is ticking, the work is piling up and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. We all have the same number of hours each day, but as an entrepreneur I’m just not cutting it. It’s amazing that the 1440 minutes each day just seem to slip through my fingers. I swear I’m being cheated!
But then I met some really efficient people and am astounded that they use their time so well. It seems they maximize every second, all 86,400 of those tiny ticks product results.
Since time is one of the two shortages all businesses face, I decided to find out how we can get more done is less time.
PLAN YOUR DAY
Really good time managers plan their days in advance. Not only do they keep a tight schedule, they prioritize the tasks on their schedules so they get the most important things done first.
SET END TIMES FOR APPOINTMENTS
Most people schedule their appointments with start times but forget to note the end times of their appointments. The best way to do this is to schedule back-to-back appointments and run them like clock-work. You’ll be shocked at how much more you can get done.
STICK TO SCHEDULES IN MEETINGS
How many times have you gone into an 8 am meeting only to have people chat and socialize for 20 minutes, resulting in the meeting run late? It happens all the time. I’ve also noticed that when a meeting has to be finished at a certain time or someone important has to leave early, amazingly the meeting stays on track and finishes on time. This is telling me that there’s tons of wasted time built into the average meeting.
Whether a phone call, an appointment or a meeting, set the tone right away by saying that you have another appointment immediately following and need to address the important issues first. People will respect you for your targeted approach and know thatyou mean business.
USE TECHNOLOGY MORE
I’ve noticed that my Skype meetings are much more focused and accomplish just as much as my face-to-face meetings. As a small business owner the best thing you can do is embrace technology.
GATEKEEPERS ARE GREAT.
There’s nothing like a gatekeeper to shield you from daily, or for some of us, minute-by-minute interruptions. Of course, that would be another person on salary and many of us can’t afford that. With some skill you can actually run interference and safeguard your time anyway, by acting as your own gatekeeper. Here’s how it’s done.
Let me know what you’re thinking. I’d love to hear any other ideas you have about time and how to get more out of it…
