The message so far has been about the power of your words. Lee Milteer hit it home today and made me sit up and think hard about what I’m saying. I’ll strive to use this powerful tool more effectively in the future. Here’s some of the thoughts that I want to share with you right now….
Listen to yourself, listen to others and listen especially to those who have done what it is that you want to do.
Listen to yourself.
Your words are an indication of how you really feel about yourself. That’s the bottom line! What you say about you is like a window into your soul. There it is for everyone to see, as real as can be. Is that making you happy or are you scared?
A few tips for you
Talk yourself up:
Not a steady stream broadcast of me, me, ME, either. You need to speak as someone worth listening to. If you see yourself as secure, confident and established, and your words should reflect that image.
Keep it positive – Happy, hopeful and uplifting language helps everyone enjoy their day. People gravitate to those who feel good about themselves and others.
Think first – A well-defined message allows people to understand exactly what you are trying to communicate. It’s a good idea to think through it a bit before actually needing the dialogue, especially in a business environment.
Listen to others:
Keep in mind everything that I’ve said above. It can all be used to get a clear indication of what others are thinking as well.
Vary word choices
Many people have marveled at my ability to get right to the heart of the challenges they are having. Frequently, people have asked me how I do this. The answer to this question always seemed to surprise them. I count words. As people speak, I listen to the words they are saying, not just the meaning of their message. Words that keep cropping up in their conversations are giving insight into the speaker’s true beliefs, their perception of themselves and their ability to make changes in their lives. Give it a try and you’ll be shocked at how much better you understand the other person.
Listen to those who have been successful at what you want to do.
They’ve done it and they’ll tell you exactly how you can do it as well.
Messages of hope
You’ll see that there is rarely any magic potions, trickery or luck. The message will usually start with a vision, a strategic plan, and of lots of hard work. They positioned themselves to win and when they had their opportunity they seized the moment.
Every single speaker at that I’ve seen on stage so far has delivered this same message. Yes, they’ve used different words, unique phrases and personal insights but basically, it’s all the same.
